How to Calculate Steel Weight?
How to Calculate Steel Weight? – Steel is the most significant material in construction processes, and it is used in the construction of various large-scale infrastructures like dams, bridges, roads, etc. and these kind of infrastructures demand proper planning of materials like the weight of the material, size of the material, strength of the material, etc. That is why the calculation of the weight of steel during construction becomes important.
In this blog, we will discuss the formula for calculating steel weight and also learn about the facts that why it is important to measure the weight of the steel and what measure can be used to calculate it accurately. This blog is an insight of Khandelwal Loha as it is a prominent steel company in India, and it can provide the best method to calculate steel weight because of experience and expertise.
Formula For Calculating Steel Weight
There is a specific formula for calculating steel weight that can be used by everyone easily and helps in measuring accurate weight of steel. This formula is very useful for the builders as measuring steel weight is an important task for them to do. The formula is as :
Weight (kg) = Length (m) × Cross-sectional Area (cm²) × Density (g/cm³) ÷ 1000 |
This formula can’t be directly understood by many people and for the better understanding of this formula we are providing details about it by breaking it into different smaller parts.
- Length is symbolized by the unit (m) and it means the total length of the steel rod or bar. You can measure it with the help of length measuring tools. Builders have length measuring tools in their toolbars.
- Cross-sectional area is symbolized with the unit (cm²) and it defines the area of steel’s cross-section. This number can vary as per the shapes or sizes of the steel.
- Density is symbolized with a unit (g/cm³) which defines the density of the steel. Density will mostly remain the same for every calculation and we typically used 7.85 g/cm³ as density of steel.
Why Calculating steel weight important?
There are several reasons for calculating steel weight as it is significant for the builders to use accurate weight of steel in the construction process as inaccurate weight can affect the stability and durability of infrastructures. Various reasons explaining the importance of steel weight measurement are mentioned below:
- Needful for the project estimation as builders can measure the accurate steel needed for different projects and give them an idea about the quantity of steel they need to purchase from the steel dealers.
- Helpful in cost calculations also as budgeting is the main part of every project and when builders have the idea about the quantity of the steel they will estimate the budget accordingly.
- Builders need to transport material from steel companies to construction sites and here for the transportation exact weight is needed.
- Steel is the main material that decides the strength of the infrastructure and it can be possible through weight measuring only as low weight of steel in infrastructure can affect its strength and durability.
Steel Weight Calculation for Different Shapes
Weight calculation of steel primarily depends on the shape of the steel as steel comes in three different shapes i.e. round bar, square bar, and angle iron. We will describe every shape here as a different formula is used to measure the weight of the steel as per its shape.
Formula for round bar– you can use this particular formula if you are measuring the weight of round bar steel. For calculation, a cross sectional area is calculated for using the area of a circle.
Weight = π × (Diameter / 2)² × Length × 7.85 ÷ 1000 |
Formula for square bar– for measuring the weight of square bars steel you can use this formula mentioned as follows.
Weight = Side² × Length × 7.85 ÷ 1000 |
Formula for angle iron– it is difficult to measure the weight of the angle iron as its shape is little complicated and for calculation its weight you can use this particular formula
Weight = (Width × Thickness × Length) × 7.85 ÷ 1000 |
Conclusion
Thus we can say that measuring weight is necessary for every builder as many factors of construction depend upon the weight of the steel like the accurate quantity measurement as builders can get an idea of quantity needed for the infrastructure and along with the quantity, builders usually get an idea about the price also and they can manage their budget accordingly. There are few formulas to measure the weight of the steel, these formulas are formulated as per the shape of the steel.
